Harness builds on the concept of the Distributed Virtual Machine that was pioneered by PVM research, but explores dynamic capabilities beyond what PVM can supply. The Harness project is focused on developing three key capabilities within the framework of a heterogeneous distributed computing environment that includes (like PVM) everything from laptops running Windows 95/NT to multiprocessor supercomputers running Unix.
