Graz University of Technology researchers co-ordinate "Brain-i-Nets" EU project
Intelligent machines that not only think for themselves but also actively learn are the vision of researchers of the Institute for Theoretical Science (IGI) at Graz University of Technology. They have been co-ordinating the European Union research project "Brain-i-Nets" - Novel Brain Inspired Learning Paradigms for Large-Scale Neuronal Networks - for three years, and have launched a three-day meeting of the participating researchers in Graz. Governor Bill Richardson launches statewide access to New Mexico's supercomputer

An organic transistor paves the way for new generations of neuro-inspired computers
For the first time, CNRS and CEA researchers have developed a transistor that can mimic the main functionalities of a synapse. This organic transistor, based on pentacene and gold nanoparticles and known as a NOMFET (Nanoparticle Organic Memory Field-Effect Transistor), has opened the way to new generations of neuro-inspired computers, capable of responding in a manner similar to the nervous system. Supercomputing time awarded to design transformational lithium air battery
24 million hours of supercomputing time out of a total of 1.6 billion available hours at Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories have been awarded to investigate materials for developing lithium air batteries, capable of powering a car for 500 miles on a single charge. Through the Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) programme, a research team including scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory and IBM will use two of the world's most powerful supercomputers to design new materials required for a lithium air battery. Princeton announces plans for new computing research center at Forrestal
Princeton University plans to build a facility to house its high-performance computing research systems on the Forrestal Campus in Plainsboro about three miles north of the main campus. The High-Performance Computing Research Center would be located on the University's property just north of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. It would serve as home of TIGRESS - the Terascale Infrastructure for Groundbreaking Research in Engineering and Science Center. Google awards $1 million for research effort to slash energy consumption in Internet data centres

Google Inc. has awarded a two-year, $1 million research grant aimed at slashing energy usage in large Internet data centres to a team of computer scientists at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), Rutgers University, the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia. The company may also award an additional $500,000 for a third year subject to programme review.

Bull has signed a pan-European outsourcing contract with PaperlinX Europe, one of the largest distributors of paper, sign & display products and packaging materials in Europe. PaperlinX was looking for a partner that could standardize and centralize its complete IT infrastructure. By outsourcing its IT, PaperlinX is able to reduce costs, raise its service levels and focus on its core activities. Within the contract, Bull is responsible for the data centre operations of PaperlinX, as well as the desktop management and helpdesk activities for 4500 users. Ames Laboratory researchers to use supercomputer and chemistry to solve global problems
Depending on how they form and their chemical composition, clouds reflect and absorb varying amounts of the sun's energy. That makes them key players in global climate change. Yet the complex molecular processes underlying cloud formation are little understood. By creating diamond-based nanowire devices, a team at Harvard has taken another step towards making applications based on quantum science and technology possible. The new device offers a bright, stable source of single photons at room temperature, an essential element in making fast and secure computing with light practical. The finding could lead to a new class of nanostructured diamond devices suitable for quantum communication and computing, as well as advance areas ranging from biological and chemical sensing to scientific imaging. Photons led astray
Life would sometimes be so much easier if we were quantum particles. For example, if we were trying to find our way out of a strange town allowing chance telling us which way to go at every intersection. As objects of classical physics, this would mean becoming more and more lost in the centre of the road network. If we were particles that obeyed the laws of quantum mechanics, we would sooner or later find our way to the edge of town on the randomly-chosen route. An international team headed by researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light has now proven this experimentally. They have used polarized light - light waves which oscillate in a particular plane - to design a simple model for a quantum physical random walk. Their experiments could provide new insights into statistical processes such as photosynthesis, and help to accelerate search algorithms. Princeton scientist makes a leap in quantum computing

The European Commission has published an expert group report "The Future of Cloud computing - Opportunities for European Cloud Computing Beyond 2010" in Brussels at a symposium last week. The report sees opportunities for Europe and recommends that the European Commission (EC) should stimulate research and technological development in the area of Cloud Computing. Researchers create drug to keep tumor growth switched off
A novel - and rapid - anti-cancer drug development strategy has resulted in a new drug that stops kidney and pancreatic tumours from growing in mice. Researchers at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), have found a drug that binds to a molecular "switch" found in cancer cells and cancer-associated blood vessels to keep it in the "off" position. Maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), for example, depend on measuring minute differences in the temperature of the sky. When astrophysicist Julian Borrill joined the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1997, his first project was designing computational tools for future CMB experiments, a toolbox capable of handling an expected flood of cosmic data.
