The VSC is an initiative on the part of Flanders to make available to researchers a high-performance calculating infrastructure that includes both supercomputing and Grid computing. This HPC (High Performance Computing) environment will be based on a distributed architecture in which a site can offer a specific specialisation. Essential to this distributed architecture is a fast link between the various sites of the VSC. First, the feasibility of this architecture is being tested.
BELNET provided lightpaths - 10 Gbps Ethernet - to link four locations: KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Ghent University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel. With the defined tests as point of departure, among others shared data storage with storage capacity at Ghent University, the choice was made for a star connection to Ghent University. The first information was sent over these lightpaths around the middle of August. Tests were first performed with 1 Gbps interfaces. The provisional results were very satisfactory. Speeds to 940 Mbps were obtained. Tests at 10 Gbps will follow soon. |
