Fujitsu Siemens Computers advances standardized central storage and server management
Munich 07 February 2008 Fujitsu Siemens Computers' ServerView Suite management solution will support third-party storage systems as well as the company's own FibreCAT storage solutions using SNIA's (Storage Networking Industry Association) SMI-S (Storage Management Initiative – Specification). ServerView is among the first management applications to utilize this innovative standard, especially in a cross vendor scenario. Now users of FibreCAT CX and EMC CLARiiON storage systems will also be able to monitor their PRIMERGY servers and their storage systems centrally over a standard interface in the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite on a central platform.

"By using SMI-S for integrating server and storage management we show our commitment to industry standards and to drive their implementation. Doing this with EMC storage products shows the strength of this unique partnership", stated Helmut Beck, Vice President of Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "Now you can monitor and manage PRIMERGY servers and FibreCAT or Clariion Storage systems with one management software, through a single and central user interface. That helps our customers to ease administration and save money."

Fujitsu Siemens Computers' PRIMERGY ServerView Suite is a system management solution for PRIMERGY servers and FibreCAT storage systems. Among other benefits, the solution features an event management system that is custom-configurable via a web interface. This system delivers information quickly and reliably on the status of servers and storage devices and on specifically defined events when they occur on the computers and subsystems being monitored. It monitors key functions and components, such as cooling fans, the power supply, the CMOS battery, temperature, hard drives attached to SCSI and RAID controllers, memory modules, and the central processing unit (CPU). If the set values are exceeded or if an error is detected, the ServerView Suite's event management issues an alert and initiates corrective action where possible.

By using the SMI-S standard ServerView Suite management software comprehensively supports storage systems as FibreCAT and the EMC CLARiiON family of products. ServerView Storage Manager software integrates into the PRIMERGY ServerView Suite and provides monitoring via SMI-S. Storage components or RAID controllers are detected automatically and are visualized with their status by respective symbols in the Server View management environment. Administrators are instantly notified on critical events through ServerView's Event Management and can further obtain detailed information on the controllers as well as port lists, storage pools and volumes with a few mouse clicks.

The new integration of the FibreCAT CX family and the corresponding EMC CLARiiON systems (CX3 UltraScale series, CX300, CX500 and CX700) into the ServerView management suite saves users time and effort because the server and storage systems share the same reporting and alert mechanisms. In addition, this integration provides a basis for consolidating server and storage management on a central, unified platform that supports a comprehensive set of management tools. The EMC Navisphere Management Suite, for example, can be accessed directly from within the ServerView Suite user interface, eliminating the division between server and storage management for greater productivity and efficiency.
