Mellanox to highlight Infiniband technology leadership
Dresden 19 June 2008 Michael Kagan from Mellanox talked about Infiniband, the industry standard defined ten years ago, and which is excellent from the price/performance viewpoint. It is reliable with congestion management and very efficient. It is also scalable for petascale computing and beyond. Virtualization acceleration is also possible.

Infiniband is making the most powerful clusters and powering half of the TOP500 machines. Infiniband QDR will show up in the November 2008 TOP500 list.

Mellanox provides end-to-end Infiniband products with very low latency and low CPU overhead with remote DMA and high throughput of 40Gb/s.

In terms of adaptor Mellanox presents the ConnectX Infiniband solution with superior real application performance. It is used in the automotive industry.

Scalability to 64+ cores per node is possible, to 20K+ nodes per subnet. It guarantees the same low latency regardless of the number of cores.

The real applications require more nodes and lots of bandwidth in the range of tens of kilobytes. You can send messages and about 100% of the CPU is available for the applications.

The fourth generation of Mellanox switches delivers 36 40Gb/s or 12 120Gb/s Infiniband ports.

For petascale computing more bandwidth is needed as well as a faster network streaming propagation to deliver bandwidth to the application. The petascale cluster needs full offload.
