Welcome address by Professor Wolfgang Schmid and Official ISC'08 Awards Ceremony
Dresden 18 June 2008 Professor Wolfgang Schmid from Silicon Saxony and Qimonda Dresden, Germany introduced Saxony as a very IT-friendly Bundesland to the ISC'08 audience. Silicon Saxony has over 44.000 employees in IT-companies including AMD, Infinion and many universities and mid-sized companies. The energy cost is the new challenge by excellence to remain efficient in data processing and storage. It is a hot topic in this conference too. Professor Resch, chairman of the Awards Committee, assisted by Stephan Gillich from Intel, Germany and Prof. Dr. Achim Bachem from the Research Centre Jülich, Germany celebrated the winners of the ISC'08 Awards.

Professor Resch said that it was both much easier but also much more difficult for the committee this year to pick the winners for the ISC'08 Awards. Much easier because of the outstanding amount of excellent contributions but also much more difficult to perform the final selection. The two following outstanding papers were rewarded:

  • Jülich Supercomputing Centre - "Performance Measurement and Analysis Tools for Extremely Scalable Systems" by

Bernd Mohr, Brian Wylie and Felix Wolf

  • Mathematics and Computer Science at Argonne National Laboratory on Grid Computing - "Distributed I/O with ParaMEDIC: Experiences with a Worldwide Supercomputer" by among others S. Matsuoka and P. Balaji

Sponsor for the Award, Intel presented a workstation to both winners. "If you have not won this year, go for the ISC Award 2009", invited Professor Resch.

The PRACE project is aiming to encourage young scientists to do supercomputing. Therefore, the PRACE Award was introduced. Prof. Achim Bachem handed over the first prize to Professor Turek of the Technical University of Dortmund for a paper about "UCHPC - UnConventional High Performance Computing for Finite Element Simulations".

The PRACE award will continue in the following years.
