GDI-Grid to provide efficient access and processing of geodata for the geosimulation of sound wave expansion and catastrophies
Hannover 06 August 2007 The need for calculation performance and IT resources is constantly increasing in society, economy and research. This is especially true for the geo-informatics economy and in particular for the domains of security, catastrophy management and processing of country-wide geobasic databases. Existing resources must be regularly made up to date and be replaced with new capacities. An important goal of the geodata infrastructure Grid (GDI-Grid) is the effective and efficient access of existing resources and the optimization of their use. The three-year project is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) and started on July 1, 2007.

The project is focused on solutions for the efficient integration and processing of geodata based on geo-informatics systems (GIS) and geodata infrastructures (GDI). GDI-Grid is therefore aimed at practical and concrete situations. The complimentarity of GDI and Grid is shown and demonstrated through the integration of GDI services in the GDI-Grid. The basis is formed by distributed geodata, on which processing is performed by means of established GIS- and GDI services. Their potential is being enhanced through adapted services for prepartion, fusion and processing. Next, standard-based generic GDI-services are being developed for a variety of problem solutions.

Important elements for processing are data, models, services, and service chains for geodata infrastructures. Services for integration, management and processing of geodata are being developed and implemented on the D-Grid infrastructure. This wil enable a problem-adapted approach. The "Proof-of-Concept" will be tested in selected representative scenarios.

The partners of the e-Science infrastructure will be free to use the generic services, components and experiences beyond the funding period. The long-term use is secured through product development for the geodata market by a feasibility study that provides concrete recommendations for use in practice. In addition, the developed prototypes and demonstrators constitute the basis for the successful enterprise development of the GDI-Grid integration.
