Antelope Valley Hospital gets a healthy dose of data centre technologies from IBM
Armonk 17 August 2007 Antelope Valley Hospital is migrating from 70 Dell systems to just four virtualized IBM System x servers to dramatically improve data centre performance and reduce energy costs. With fewer physical servers, the hospital's data centre will run cooler and energy costs will be significantly reduced.

Founded more than 50 years ago, the Los Angeles County, California-based hospital is the only non-profit hospital in the Antelope Valley and offers a full range of services, including comprehensive diagnostic imaging services, surgical and critical care units, rehabilitation and specialized cardiac care services. Antelope Valley Hospital also has the second busiest emergency department in Los Angeles County, seeing more than 100,000 patients per year. With the community depending on the hospital to meet their health care needs, the physicians and hospital staff must have reliable information technology (IT) systems.

To provide the hospital with the high reliability it needs for their IT systems, Antelope Valley Hospital leaders turned to IBM System x3850 servers featuring IBM's X3 Architecture with three levels of memory protection and advanced systems management, and IBM System Storage DS4800. The advanced, integrated technologies enable the hospital to run more efficiently for staff and patient needs.

"Many patients don't realize how important IT systems are to the care they receive. It is critical that our systems have the advanced technology to help us stay at the forefront of patient safety and medical technology", stated Humberto Quintanar, Antelope Valley Hospital's chief information officer. "The new IBM systems are more reliable and have increased capacities to meet our needs. Now, when we need to run a new application, we can simply add a new virtual server on IBM System x - cutting downtime from days to just minutes."
